Troubleshoot VBS Files

Frequent VBS Opening Issues

Microsoft Notepad Disappeared

You attempt to load your VBS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The VBS File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Notepad isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your VBS because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens VBS files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Notepad

It is possible that your version of Microsoft Notepad isn't able to open your VBScript File file due to incompatibility. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Notepad. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: If you right-click on your VBS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening VBS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Additional VBS Opening Issues

Although you might already have Microsoft Notepad or another VBS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening VBScript File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading VBS files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:

  • Windows Registry VBS file paths that are incorrect
  • Corruption of the VBS file description inside the Registry
  • Corrupt install of Microsoft Notepad or other VBS-related program
  • Your VBS file is corrupted (issues with your VBScript File file itself)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your VBS
  • Hardware associated with VBS has outdated drivers
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your VBScript File file
