Sources of REG Problems

Common REG Opening Problems

Missing Windows Registry Editor

When you double-click your REG file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Windows Registry Editor installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your REG because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: Another REG-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Obsolete Version of Windows Registry Editor

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Registry File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Windows Registry Editor installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Registry File file was created by a newer Windows Registry Editor than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of REG file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening REG files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening REGs

Assuming you have the right Windows Registry Editor version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening REG files. If you're still experiencing problems opening REG files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:

  • Invalid REG file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry REG description
  • Corrupt install of Windows Registry Editor or other REG-related program
  • REG file corruption
  • The REG is infected with a virus
  • REG-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Registry File file
