PAC File Complications

Troubles Opening PAC Files

Internet Explorer Isn't There

When trying to open your PAC file, you get the error "Can't Open PAC File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Internet Explorer missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens PAC files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Obsolete Version of Internet Explorer

In other instances, your Proxy Auto-Config File file version may not be supported by your version of Internet Explorer. You will need to download a newer version of Internet Explorer if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Proxy Auto-Config File file was created by a newer version of Internet Explorer than you have on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your PAC file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the PAC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Internet Explorer installed.

Other PAC File Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Internet Explorer will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening PAC files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:

  • PAC file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the PAC file inside the Windows Registry
  • Partial installation of Internet Explorer that did not fully complete
  • Your PAC file is corrupted (issues with your Proxy Auto-Config File file itself)
  • Malware-tainted PAC file can't be opened
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PAC file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Proxy Auto-Config File file
