SPC Troubleshooting

Frequent SPC Opening Issues

OpenSSL Isn't There

When you double-click your SPC file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have OpenSSL installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the SPC file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: Another SPC-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Outdated OpenSSL

Your Software Publisher Certificate File file is incompatible with OpenSSL because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version OpenSSL (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your Software Publisher Certificate File file was created by a newer OpenSSL than what you have installed.

Tip: Investigate your SPC file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the SPC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of OpenSSL installed.

Other Causes of SPC File Opening Problems

Assuming you have the right OpenSSL version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening SPC files. If you are still having problems opening SPC files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for SPC
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the SPC file inside the Windows Registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the SPC format
  • SPC file corruption
  • Your SPC has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware associated with SPC has outdated drivers
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Software Publisher Certificate File file successfully
