Understanding PY Issues
Troubles Opening PY Files
Microsoft Notepad is Not Installed
Double-clicking your PY file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open PY File". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Notepad is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another PY-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Outdated Microsoft Notepad
Your Python Script file is incompatible with Microsoft Notepad because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Python Script file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your PY file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the PY file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening PYs
You can still experience errors opening PY files even with the latest version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PY files. Other contributing causes:
- Windows Registry PY file paths that are incorrect
- The PY file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the PY format
- Your PY can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PY
- Device drivers for PY-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Python Script file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
