Sources of RIS Problems

Troubles Opening RIS Files

EndNote Isn't There

When you double-click your RIS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to EndNote missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your RIS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When another RIS application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Wrong Version of EndNote is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Research Information Systems Citation File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of EndNote from Thomson Reuters Corporation is recommended. Most of the time your Research Information Systems Citation File file was created by a newer EndNote than what you have installed.

Tip: Investigate your RIS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the RIS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of EndNote installed.

Other Causes of RIS File Opening Problems

You can still experience errors opening RIS files even with the latest version of EndNote installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening RIS files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:

  • RIS file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Corruption of the RIS file description inside the Registry
  • EndNote or another RIS application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your RIS file is corrupted (issues with your Research Information Systems Citation File file itself)
  • RIS file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Hardware related to RISs has device driver corruption
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Research Information Systems Citation File files
