Troubleshooting Problems Opening SBS Files
Common Problems Opening SBS Files
Substance Designer Not Present
You attempt to load your SBS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The SBS File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have Substance Designer for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your SBS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens SBS files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Obsolete Version of Substance Designer
Your Substance Package file is incompatible with Substance Designer because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Allegorithmic website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Substance Designer. Most of the time your Substance Package file was created by a newer Substance Designer than what you have installed.
Tip: Investigate your SBS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening SBS files are due to having the incorrect version of Substance Designer installed on your computer.
Additional SBS Opening Issues
Although you might already have Substance Designer or another SBS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Substance Package files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening SBSs. Additional factors include:
- SBS file type Registry entries are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the SBS file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a SBS-associated program (eg. Substance Designer)
- Something has caused file corruption of your SBS
- Your SBS is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your SBS file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Substance Package file
