SIT File Complications

Issues Opening SIT Files

Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe Not Present

When you double-click your SIT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your SIT, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Obsolete Version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe

It is possible that your version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe isn't able to open your StuffIt Archive file due to incompatibility. If you've got the wrong version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your StuffIt Archive file was created by a different (newer) version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe than what's installed.

Tip: If you right-click on your SIT file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe version on your computer can cause problems opening SIT files.

Other Causes of SIT File Opening Problems

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening SIT files. These issues include:

  • Invalid SIT file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the SIT file inside the Windows Registry
  • Corrupt install of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe or other SIT-related program
  • SIT file corruption
  • SIT file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Device drivers for SIT-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open StuffIt Archive files
