SITX Troubleshooting
Common SITX Opening Problems
Missing Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe
You attempt to load your SITX file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The SITX File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your SITX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your SITX, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe Requires Update
In other instances, your StuffIt X Archive file version may not be supported by your version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe. If you've got the wrong version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your StuffIt X Archive file was created by a newer Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe than what you have installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your SITX file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening SITX files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading SITX Files
Although you might already have Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe or another SITX-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening StuffIt X Archive files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening SITXs. These issues include:
- Invalid SITX file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The SITX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a SITX-associated program (eg. Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe)
- The SITX itself is corrupted
- Past or present virus infection has affected your SITX
- Hardware related to SITXs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the StuffIt X Archive format
