Troubleshoot T3 Files

Frequent T3 Opening Issues

TADS Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open T3 Files" when trying to open your T3. Customarily, this means that TADS is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your T3 with TADS, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have TADS installed, and you know of another program to open your T3 file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

TADS is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of TADS won't support your TADS 3 Game Data file. If you do not have the proper version TADS (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your TADS 3 Game Data file was created by a different (newer) version of TADS than what's installed.

Tip: Investigate your T3 file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening T3 files are due to having the wrong version of TADS installed.

Other T3 File Opening Causes

Assuming you have the right TADS version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening T3 files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening T3s. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Windows Registry T3 file paths that are incorrect
  • Deletion of the T3 file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the T3 format
  • File corruption affecting your T3 file
  • Your T3 is infected with malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your T3 file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your TADS 3 Game Data file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
