TEX File Complications

Typical TEX Opening Challenges

gVim Isn't There

When you double-click your TEX file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that gVim is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your TEX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another TEX-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

gVim is Out-of-Date

In other instances, your LaTeX Source Document file version may not be supported by your version of gVim. You will need to download a newer version of gVim if you don't have the right version. Your LaTeX Source Document file was probably created by a newer release of gVim than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your TEX file and clicking "Properties".

Regardless, most of the TEX file opening problems relate to not having the right version of gVim installed.

Other TEX File Issues

You can still experience errors opening TEX files even with the latest version of gVim installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening TEX files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for TEX are wrong
  • Corruption of the TEX file description inside the Registry
  • gVim or another TEX application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your TEX can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted TEX file can't be opened
  • Device drivers for TEX-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open LaTeX Source Document files
