USTAR File Complications
Common USTAR Opening Problems
Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe Removed
You attempt to load your USTAR file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The USTAR File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the USTAR file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: Another USTAR-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe won't support your Uniform Standard Tape Archive Format File file. Download the latest Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe version from the Smith Micro Software website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Uniform Standard Tape Archive Format File file was created by a different (newer) version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of USTAR file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening USTAR files are due to having the wrong version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe installed.
Other USTAR File Issues
You can still experience errors opening USTAR files even with the latest version of Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening USTARs. Other contributing causes:
- USTAR file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the USTAR file description from the Registry by mistake
- Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe or another USTAR application experienced a flawed installation
- Your USTAR can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- USTAR file integrity has been compromised by malware
- USTAR-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Uniform Standard Tape Archive Format File files
