Mozilla Firefox Removed
You attempt to load your XPI file and get an error such as "- Can't Open The XPI File Extension". Customarily, this means that Mozilla Firefox is not installed on - . The OS won't know what to do with your XPI file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Mozilla Firefox installed, and you know of another program to open your XPI file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Mozilla Firefox is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Mozilla Firefox installed that's incompatible with your Mozilla Installer Package type. You will need to download a newer version of Mozilla Firefox if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your Mozilla Installer Package file was created by a newer Mozilla Firefox than what you have installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your XPI file and clicking "Properties".
Regardless, most of the XPI file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Mozilla Firefox installed.
Other XPI File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening XPI files even with the latest version of Mozilla Firefox installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening XPI files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry XPI file paths that are incorrect
- Unintentional removal of the description of the XPI file inside the Windows Registry
- Invalid installation of a XPI-associated program (eg. Mozilla Firefox)
- The XPI itself is corrupted
- The XPI is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for XPI-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Mozilla Installer Package file
