XDF File Summary

Our most recent information indicates that XDF files are associated with three unique file types (the most prevalent being the Extended Disk Format Image format) and can be viewed primarily with OS/2, including two other known software applications (listed below). Although XDF files are traditionally categorized as Disk Image Files, they can also be Data Files.

Both desktop and mobile devices enable you to view and (sometimes) edit these files, depending on the software used. These files have a Popularity Rating of "Low", meaning they are not very commonly observed on your average hard disk.

XDF File Complications

Typical XDF Opening Challenges

OS/2 Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open XDF Files" when trying to open your XDF. Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because OS/2 isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your XDF because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: Another XDF-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

OS/2 is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of OS/2 isn't able to open your Extended Disk Format Image file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of OS/2 if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Extended Disk Format Image file version that was created by a newer version of OS/2 than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Right-clicking on your XDF, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Conclusion: The majority of XDF file opening issues are due to not having the correct OS/2 version installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading XDF Files

Even with the correct version of OS/2 installed, you can still experience difficulties opening XDFs. If you are still having problems opening XDF files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • XDF file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the XDF file in the Windows registry
  • Invalid installation of a XDF-associated program (eg. OS/2)
  • The XDF itself is corrupted
  • Your XDF has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware associated with XDF has outdated drivers
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Extended Disk Format Image file
