Understanding XSL Issues

Troubles Opening XSL Files

Microsoft Notepad Isn't There

Double-clicking your XSL file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open XSL File". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the XSL file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XSL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Notepad

Your XML eXtensible Stylesheet file is incompatible with Microsoft Notepad because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your XML eXtensible Stylesheet file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Investigate your XSL file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Notepad version on your computer can cause problems opening XSL files.

Associated Difficulties Loading XSL Files

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Notepad will resolve your issue. Other XSL opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:

  • XSL file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Deletion of the XSL file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Defective install of a XSL program, such as Microsoft Notepad
  • Your XSL can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your XSL
  • Hardware related to XSLs has device driver corruption
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open XML eXtensible Stylesheet files
