XVM File Complications
Typical XVM Opening Challenges
VMware Workstation is Not Installed
You attempt to load your XVM file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The XVM File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have VMware Workstation installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the XVM file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have VMware Workstation installed, and you know of another program to open your XVM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
VMware Workstation Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of VMware Workstation won't support your VMware Console Configuration File file. If you do not have the proper version VMware Workstation (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a VMware Console Configuration File file version that was created by a newer version of VMware Workstation than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your XVM file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening XVM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other XVM File Issues
Although you might already have VMware Workstation or another XVM-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening VMware Console Configuration File files. If you are still having problems opening XVM files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for XVM
- Corruption of the XVM file description inside the Registry
- Invalid installation of a XVM-associated program (eg. VMware Workstation)
- Your XVM file is corrupted (issues with your VMware Console Configuration File file itself)
- Your XVM has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers for XVM-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your VMware Console Configuration File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
