AU File Complications

Frequent AU Opening Issues

Audacity Removed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open AU Files" when trying to open your AU. Customarily, this means that Audacity is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your AU with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your AU, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Incorrect Audacity Version

In other instances, your Audacity Audio File file version may not be supported by your version of Audacity. If you do not have the proper version Audacity (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Audacity Audio File file was created by a different (newer) version of Audacity than what's installed.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your AU file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening AU files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Associated Difficulties Loading AU Files

Although you might already have Audacity or another AU-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Audacity Audio File files. If you are still having problems opening AU files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Windows Registry AU file paths that are incorrect
  • The AU file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Partial installation of Audacity that did not fully complete
  • File corruption affecting your AU file
  • The AU is infected with a virus
  • Hardware related to AUs has device driver corruption
  • Windows cannot load your Audacity Audio File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
