Understanding M4A Issues
Typical M4A Opening Challenges
Microsoft Windows Media Player Disappeared
If you attempt to load your M4A file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open M4A Files". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Windows Media Player installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your M4A because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens M4A files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Microsoft Windows Media Player Version
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Windows Media Player won't support your MPEG-4 Audio File file. Download the latest Microsoft Windows Media Player version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your MPEG-4 Audio File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Windows Media Player than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your M4A file and clicking "Properties".
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows Media Player version on your computer can cause problems opening M4A files.
Other M4A File Issues
Errors opening MPEG-4 Audio File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Windows Media Player software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening M4As. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- M4A file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Accidental deletion of the description of the M4A file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Windows Media Player or other M4A-related program
- File corruption affecting your M4A file
- Malware-tainted M4A file can't be opened
- Hardware associated with M4A has outdated drivers
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your MPEG-4 Audio File file
