Sources of S3M Problems
Common S3M Opening Problems
ModPlug Player Not Present
When you double-click your S3M file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have ModPlug Player installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your S3M with ModPlug Player, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your S3M file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of ModPlug Player
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a S3M file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Open Source website to download (or purchase) the latest version of ModPlug Player. Most of the time your S3M file was created by a newer ModPlug Player than what you have installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your S3M, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening S3M files are due to having the incorrect version of ModPlug Player installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading S3M Files
Even with the correct version of ModPlug Player installed, you can still experience difficulties opening S3Ms. Other S3M opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for S3M are wrong
- Deletion of the S3M file description from the Registry by mistake
- Corrupt install of ModPlug Player or other S3M-related program
- Your S3M can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- S3M file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with S3M software need to be updated
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your S3M file
