Understanding KIN Issues
Typical KIN Opening Challenges
Cakewalk SONAR is Not Installed
When trying to open your KIN file, you get the error "Can't Open KIN File Type". Customarily, this means that Cakewalk SONAR is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the KIN file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another KIN application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Obsolete Version of Cakewalk SONAR
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Cakewalk SONAR installed that's incompatible with your Kinetic Music Project type. Visit the Cakewalk, Inc. website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Cakewalk SONAR. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Right-clicking on your KIN, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Conclusion: The majority of KIN file opening issues are due to not having the correct Cakewalk SONAR version installed.
Additional KIN Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening KIN files even with the latest version of Cakewalk SONAR installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening KIN files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:
- Windows Registry KIN file paths that are incorrect
- Accidental deletion of the description of the KIN file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Cakewalk SONAR or other KIN-related program
- KIN file corruption
- Your KIN is infected with malware
- Device drivers for KIN-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Kinetic Music Project file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
