Understanding PNG Issues
Common PNG Opening Problems
Adobe Illustrator CC is Not Installed
If you attempt to load your PNG file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open PNG Files". Usually, this is because you do not have Adobe Illustrator CC for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your PNG with Adobe Illustrator CC, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another PNG application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Adobe Illustrator CC Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Adobe Illustrator CC won't support your Portable Network Graphics file. Visit the Adobe Systems Incorporated website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Adobe Illustrator CC. The primary cause of this problem is that your Portable Network Graphics file was created by a different (newer) version of Adobe Illustrator CC than what's installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your PNG, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: Not having the right Adobe Illustrator CC version on your computer can cause problems opening PNG files.
More Causes of Problems Opening PNGs
Assuming you have the right Adobe Illustrator CC version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PNG files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PNG files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:
- PNG file type Registry entries are wrong
- Corruption of the PNG file description inside the Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the PNG format
- PNG file corruption
- Malware-tainted PNG file can't be opened
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PNG file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Portable Network Graphics file
