TIFF Troubleshooting
Typical TIFF Opening Challenges
Adobe Illustrator CC Not Present
When you double-click your TIFF file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Adobe Illustrator CC missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the TIFF file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another TIFF application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Adobe Illustrator CC is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Tagged Image File Format file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Tagged Image File Format file was probably created by a newer release of Adobe Illustrator CC than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Investigate your TIFF file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the TIFF file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed.
Other Causes of TIFF File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening TIFF files even with the latest version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening TIFF files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:
- TIFF file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the TIFF file description from the Registry by mistake
- Corrupt install of Adobe Illustrator CC or other TIFF-related program
- Your TIFF file is corrupted (issues with your Tagged Image File Format file itself)
- Malware-tainted TIFF file can't be opened
- Hardware associated with TIFF has outdated drivers
- Windows cannot load your Tagged Image File Format file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
