Sources of PSD Problems
Frequent PSD Opening Issues
Adobe Illustrator CC Isn't There
Double-clicking your PSD file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open PSD File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Adobe Illustrator CC installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PSD file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PSD, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Adobe Illustrator CC Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Adobe Photoshop Document file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Adobe Photoshop Document file was created by a newer Adobe Illustrator CC than what you have installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your PSD file and clicking "Properties".
Conclusion: The majority of PSD file opening issues are due to not having the correct Adobe Illustrator CC version installed.
Other PSD File Opening Causes
Although you might already have Adobe Illustrator CC or another PSD-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Adobe Photoshop Document files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PSD files, other external issues might be to blame. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for PSD
- The PSD file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a PSD-associated program (eg. Adobe Illustrator CC)
- Your PSD can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- PSD file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PSD file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Adobe Photoshop Document file
