Understanding WEBP Issues
Common WEBP Opening Problems
Adobe Photoshop is Not Installed
When you double-click your WEBP file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Adobe Photoshop for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your WEBP with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: Another WEBP-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Outdated Adobe Photoshop
Sometimes your installed version of Adobe Photoshop won't support your Google Image File Format file. Download the latest Adobe Photoshop version from the Adobe Systems Incorporated website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Google Image File Format file was created by a newer version of Adobe Photoshop than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your WEBP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening WEBP files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of WEBP File Opening Problems
Assuming you have the right Adobe Photoshop version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening WEBP files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening WEBP files. Other contributing causes:
- Windows Registry WEBP file paths that are incorrect
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry WEBP description
- Corrupt install of Adobe Photoshop or other WEBP-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your WEBP
- The WEBP is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for WEBP-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Google Image File Format format
