Troubleshoot 3DS Files

Troubles Opening 3DS Files

MAXON Cinema 4D Disappeared

When you double-click your 3DS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to MAXON Cinema 4D missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your 3DS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have MAXON Cinema 4D installed, and you know of another program to open your 3DS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

MAXON Cinema 4D is Out-of-Date

In other instances, your 3D Studio Scene file version may not be supported by your version of MAXON Cinema 4D. Installing the latest version of MAXON Cinema 4D from MAXON Computer is recommended. Most of the time your 3D Studio Scene file was created by a newer MAXON Cinema 4D than what you have installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your 3DS, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: Not having the right MAXON Cinema 4D version on your computer can cause problems opening 3DS files.

Additional 3DS Opening Issues

Assuming you have the right MAXON Cinema 4D version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening 3DS files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening 3DSs. Additional factors include:

  • 3DS file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the 3DS file inside the Windows Registry
  • Invalid installation of a 3DS-associated program (eg. MAXON Cinema 4D)
  • File corruption affecting your 3DS file
  • Malware-tainted 3DS file can't be opened
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your 3DS file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your 3D Studio Scene file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
