Troubles Opening CMX Files
Adobe Illustrator CC is Not Installed
If you attempt to load your CMX file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open CMX Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Adobe Illustrator CC for - installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the CMX file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your CMX, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Adobe Illustrator CC Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Adobe Illustrator CC won't support your Corel Metafile Exchange Image File file. If you've got the wrong version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Corel Metafile Exchange Image File file was created by a newer version of Adobe Illustrator CC than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your CMX file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CMX files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other CMX File Issues
You can still experience errors opening CMX files even with the latest version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening CMX files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- Invalid CMX file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the CMX file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a CMX-associated program (eg. Adobe Illustrator CC)
- File corruption affecting your CMX file
- CMX file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to CMXs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Corel Metafile Exchange Image File file
