Troubleshoot RGB Files

Common RGB Opening Problems

Missing GIMP

Double-clicking your RGB file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open RGB File". If so, it typically means that you don't have GIMP installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your RGB file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your RGB file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Outdated GIMP

In other instances, your RGB Bitmap file version may not be supported by your version of GIMP. If you've got the wrong version of GIMP installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your RGB Bitmap file was created by a different (newer) version of GIMP than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of RGB file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Conclusion: The majority of RGB file opening issues are due to not having the correct GIMP version installed.

Other RGB File Opening Causes

Although you might already have GIMP or another RGB-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening RGB Bitmap files. If you're still experiencing problems opening RGB files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for RGB are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry RGB description
  • Invalid installation of a RGB-associated program (eg. GIMP)
  • Something has caused file corruption of your RGB
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your RGB
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your RGB file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the RGB Bitmap format
