IGES File Complications
Frequent IGES Opening Issues
Autodesk Fusion 360 Removed
Double-clicking your IGES file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open IGES File". When this happens, it is commonly due to Autodesk Fusion 360 missing in %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your IGES with Autodesk Fusion 360, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Autodesk Fusion 360 installed, and you know of another program to open your IGES file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Autodesk Fusion 360 is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a IGES Exchange Format file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Autodesk Fusion 360 installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the IGES file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the IGES file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Autodesk Fusion 360 installed.
Other IGES File Issues
Errors opening IGES Exchange Format files can still occur even with the latest Autodesk Fusion 360 software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening IGESs. These issues include:
- Windows Registry IGES file paths that are incorrect
- Unintentional removal of the description of the IGES file inside the Windows Registry
- Partial installation of Autodesk Fusion 360 that did not fully complete
- IGES file corruption
- Your IGES is infected with malware
- Device drivers for IGES-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your IGES Exchange Format file
