Troubleshoot VRML Files
Frequent VRML Opening Issues
FreeWRL Disappeared
When you double-click your VRML file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have FreeWRL for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the VRML file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have FreeWRL installed, and you know of another program to open your VRML file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of FreeWRL
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Virtual Reality Modeling Language 3D World file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of FreeWRL from Open Source is recommended. Your Virtual Reality Modeling Language 3D World file was probably created by a newer release of FreeWRL than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the VRML file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the VRML file opening problems relate to not having the right version of FreeWRL installed.
Additional VRML Opening Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of FreeWRL will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening VRML files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for VRML
- Deletion of the VRML file description from the Registry by mistake
- FreeWRL or another VRML application experienced a flawed installation
- Your VRML file is corrupted (issues with your Virtual Reality Modeling Language 3D World file itself)
- The VRML is infected with a virus
- Hardware associated with VRML has outdated drivers
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Virtual Reality Modeling Language 3D World files
