Understanding MD Issues

Common MD Opening Problems

Microsoft Notepad is Not Installed

You attempt to load your MD file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The MD File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your MD because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens MD files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Microsoft Notepad Requires Update

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Notepad installed that's incompatible with your Markdown Documentation File type. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Notepad if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: If you right-click on your MD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening MD files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other Causes of MD File Opening Problems

Errors opening Markdown Documentation File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Notepad software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MDs. Additional factors include:

  • MD file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MD description
  • Corrupt install of Microsoft Notepad or other MD-related program
  • Your MD can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your MD has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers for MD-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Markdown Documentation File files
