Troubleshoot GV Files

Frequent GV Opening Issues

Graphviz is Not Installed

When trying to open your GV file, you get the error "Can't Open GV File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Graphviz installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your GV with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you don't have Graphviz installed, and you know of another program to open your GV file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Graphviz Requires Update

In other instances, your Graphviz DOT File file version may not be supported by your version of Graphviz. Visit the AT&T Labs website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Graphviz. This problem is predominately due to having a Graphviz DOT File file version that was created by a newer version of Graphviz than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your GV file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Graphviz version on your computer can cause problems opening GV files.

Other Causes of GV File Opening Problems

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Graphviz will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening GVs. These issues include:

  • Windows Registry GV file paths that are incorrect
  • The GV file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Defective install of a GV program, such as Graphviz
  • GV file corruption
  • Malware-tainted GV file can't be opened
  • GV-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Graphviz DOT File files
