S Troubleshooting
Typical S Opening Challenges
Missing Microsoft Notepad
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open S Files" when trying to open your S. Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your S file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Notepad
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Notepad won't support your Source Code File file. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Notepad if you don't have the right version. Your Source Code File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your S file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening S files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening Ss
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Notepad will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening S files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid S file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The S file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a S-associated program (eg. Microsoft Notepad)
- The S itself is corrupted
- The S is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your S file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Source Code File file
