Sources of HTC Problems
Typical HTC Opening Challenges
Missing MacroMates TextMate
If you attempt to load your HTC file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open HTC Files". Customarily, this means that MacroMates TextMate is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your HTC with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your HTC, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of MacroMates TextMate is Installed
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a HTML Component File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version MacroMates TextMate (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of HTC file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of HTC file opening issues are due to not having the correct MacroMates TextMate version installed.
Other HTC File Opening Causes
Assuming you have the right MacroMates TextMate version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening HTC files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening HTCs. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for HTC are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the HTC file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the HTC format
- Something has caused file corruption of your HTC
- Malware-tainted HTC file can't be opened
- Hardware related to HTCs has device driver corruption
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open HTML Component File files
