JAVA File Complications
Typical JAVA Opening Challenges
Microsoft Notepad Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open JAVA Files" when trying to open your JAVA. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the JAVA file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed, and you know of another program to open your JAVA file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Microsoft Notepad is Installed
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Java Source Code file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Java Source Code file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your JAVA file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening JAVA files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
Other JAVA File Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Notepad installed, you can still experience difficulties opening JAVAs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening JAVAs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- JAVA file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the JAVA file description from the Registry by mistake
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Notepad or other JAVA-related program
- File corruption affecting your JAVA file
- Malware-tainted JAVA file can't be opened
- Device drivers for JAVA-related hardware are out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Java Source Code files
