Understanding NFO Issues
Typical NFO Opening Challenges
Microsoft System Information is Not Installed
Double-clicking your NFO file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open NFO File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft System Information isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your NFO with Microsoft System Information, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your NFO, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Incorrect Microsoft System Information Version
It is possible that your version of Microsoft System Information isn't able to open your System Information File file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft System Information (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a System Information File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft System Information than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the NFO file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening NFO files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft System Information installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening NFOs
Assuming you have the right Microsoft System Information version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening NFO files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening NFOs. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for NFO
- Unintentional removal of the description of the NFO file inside the Windows Registry
- Invalid installation of a NFO-associated program (eg. Microsoft System Information)
- NFO file corruption
- Your NFO is infected with malware
- Hardware associated with NFO has outdated drivers
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open System Information File files
