UU Troubleshooting
Issues Opening UU Files
Apple Archive Utility Removed
You attempt to load your UU file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The UU File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Apple Archive Utility installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your UU with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you don't have Apple Archive Utility installed, and you know of another program to open your UU file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Apple Archive Utility is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of Apple Archive Utility won't support your Uuencoded File file. If you've got the wrong version of Apple Archive Utility installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Uuencoded File file was created by a newer version of Apple Archive Utility than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your UU file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening UU files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading UU Files
Although you might already have Apple Archive Utility or another UU-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Uuencoded File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading UU files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:
- UU file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Accidental deletion of the description of the UU file in the Windows registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the UU format
- Your UU file is corrupted (issues with your Uuencoded File file itself)
- Malware-tainted UU file can't be opened
- Hardware related to UUs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Uuencoded File file successfully
