VCS File Complications
Troubles Opening VCS Files
Microsoft Outlook Disappeared
When you double-click your VCS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Outlook for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the VCS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your VCS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Microsoft Outlook
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Outlook installed that's incompatible with your vCalendar Event File type. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Outlook from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a vCalendar Event File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Outlook than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of VCS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening VCS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other VCS File Opening Causes
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Outlook installed, you can still experience difficulties opening VCSs. Other VCS opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- VCS file type Registry entries are wrong
- The VCS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Microsoft Outlook that did not fully complete
- The VCS itself is corrupted
- VCS file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to VCSs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your vCalendar Event File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
