Troubleshooting Problems Opening YAML Files

Common YAML Opening Problems

Missing Microsoft Notepad

When trying to open your YAML file, you get the error "Can't Open YAML File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Notepad missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your YAML with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your YAML, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Microsoft Notepad Requires Update

In other instances, your YAML Document file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Notepad. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Notepad if you don't have the right version. Your YAML Document file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your YAML file and clicking "Properties".

Primarily, problems experienced when opening YAML files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening YAMLs

Errors opening YAML Document files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Notepad software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening YAMLs. Problems unrelated to software:

  • YAML file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the YAML file inside the Windows Registry
  • Invalid installation of a YAML-associated program (eg. Microsoft Notepad)
  • Your YAML can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your YAML has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your YAML file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your YAML Document file successfully
