Troubleshoot 3GP Files
Issues Opening 3GP Files
VLC Media Player is Not Installed
When you double-click your 3GP file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have VLC Media Player installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your 3GP because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have VLC Media Player installed, and you know of another program to open your 3GP file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
VLC Media Player Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of VLC Media Player won't support your 3GPP Media File file. Download the latest VLC Media Player version from the VideoLAN website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your 3GPP Media File file was created by a newer version of VLC Media Player than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your 3GP file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening 3GP files are due to having the wrong version of VLC Media Player installed.
Additional 3GP Opening Issues
Although you might already have VLC Media Player or another 3GP-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening 3GPP Media File files. If you are still having problems opening 3GP files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for 3GP are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry 3GP description
- Defective install of a 3GP program, such as VLC Media Player
- Your 3GP file is corrupted (issues with your 3GPP Media File file itself)
- Your 3GP is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your 3GP file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the 3GPP Media File file
