OGV Troubleshooting
Frequent OGV Opening Issues
VLC Media Player Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open OGV Files" when trying to open your OGV. Customarily, this means that VLC Media Player is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens OGV files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
VLC Media Player is Out-of-Date
Your Ogg Video File file is incompatible with VLC Media Player because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of VLC Media Player installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Ogg Video File file was probably created by a newer release of VLC Media Player than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the OGV file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening OGV files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other OGV File Issues
You can still experience errors opening OGV files even with the latest version of VLC Media Player installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading OGV files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- OGV file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Corruption of the OGV file description inside the Registry
- Partial installation of VLC Media Player that did not fully complete
- Your OGV can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- OGV file integrity has been compromised by malware
- OGV-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Ogg Video File file
