Troubleshooting Problems Opening M4U Files
Common Problems Opening M4U Files
Missing CyberLink PowerDVD
You attempt to load your M4U file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The M4U File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because CyberLink PowerDVD isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your M4U with CyberLink PowerDVD, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have CyberLink PowerDVD installed, and you know of another program to open your M4U file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
CyberLink PowerDVD is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a MPEG-4 Playlist file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of CyberLink PowerDVD installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your MPEG-4 Playlist file was created by a newer version of CyberLink PowerDVD than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of M4U file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the M4U file opening problems relate to not having the right version of CyberLink PowerDVD installed.
Other M4U File Opening Causes
Although you might already have CyberLink PowerDVD or another M4U-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening MPEG-4 Playlist files. If you're still experiencing problems opening M4U files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- M4U file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the M4U file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the M4U format
- Your M4U file is corrupted (issues with your MPEG-4 Playlist file itself)
- The M4U is infected with a virus
- Hardware associated with M4U has outdated drivers
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open MPEG-4 Playlist files
