Troubleshoot WVX Files
Common Problems Opening WVX Files
Microsoft Windows Media Player is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open WVX Files" when trying to open your WVX. If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Windows Media Player installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your WVX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: Another WVX-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Outdated Microsoft Windows Media Player
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Windows Media Player isn't able to open your Windows Media Video Redirector file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Windows Media Player from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Windows Media Video Redirector file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Windows Media Player than what's installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your WVX, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening WVX files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Windows Media Player installed.
Other WVX File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Windows Media Player will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening WVX files. Problems unrelated to software:
- WVX file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the WVX file description from the Registry by mistake
- Microsoft Windows Media Player or another WVX application experienced a flawed installation
- File corruption affecting your WVX file
- The WVX is infected with a virus
- WVX-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Windows Media Video Redirector file successfully
