Typical ONT Opening Challenges

theWord Disappeared

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ONT Files" when trying to open your ONT. Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because theWord isn't installed on your PC. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the ONT file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: Another ONT-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

theWord is Out-of-Date

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of theWord installed that's incompatible with your TheWord Bible Text Module type. If you've got the wrong version of theWord installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a TheWord Bible Text Module file version that was created by a newer version of theWord than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of ONT file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening ONT files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening ONTs

You can still experience errors opening ONT files even with the latest version of theWord installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening ONTs. Additional factors include:

• ONT file references in the Windows Registry are broken
• The ONT file description within the Windows Registry was removed
• Defective install of a ONT program, such as theWord
• The ONT itself is corrupted
• Malware-tainted ONT file can't be opened
• Hardware related to ONTs has device driver corruption
• Windows cannot load your TheWord Bible Text Module file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
