Sources of IM Problems

Common IM Opening Problems

SunOS Isn't There

When you double-click your IM file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that SunOS is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your IM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your IM, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Incorrect SunOS Version

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of SunOS installed that's incompatible with your SunOS Grey Scale Bitmap Picture type. Download the latest SunOS version from the Sun Microsystems website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your IM file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening IM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other IM File Issues

You can still experience errors opening IM files even with the latest version of SunOS installed on your PC. Other IM opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for IM are wrong
  • The IM file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • SunOS or another IM application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your IM file is corrupted (issues with your SunOS Grey Scale Bitmap Picture file itself)
  • Your IM is infected with malware
  • Hardware related to IMs has device driver corruption
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your SunOS Grey Scale Bitmap Picture file
