IM1 File Complications

Frequent IM1 Opening Issues

GIMP Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open IM1 Files" when trying to open your IM1. When this happens, it is commonly due to GIMP missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your IM1 because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens IM1 files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Incorrect GIMP Version

Sometimes your installed version of GIMP won't support your Sun Raster Image File file. Visit the The GIMP Development Team website to download (or purchase) the latest version of GIMP. Your Sun Raster Image File file was probably created by a newer release of GIMP than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your IM1, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening IM1 files are due to having the wrong version of GIMP installed.

Other Causes of IM1 File Opening Problems

You can still experience errors opening IM1 files even with the latest version of GIMP installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening IM1 files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:

  • Windows Registry IM1 file paths that are incorrect
  • Deletion of the IM1 file description from the Registry by mistake
  • GIMP or another IM1 application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your IM1 file is corrupted (issues with your Sun Raster Image File file itself)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your IM1
  • IM1-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Windows cannot load your Sun Raster Image File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
