Understanding MF Issues

Troubles Opening MF Files

Panda3D is Not Installed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MF Files" when trying to open your MF. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Panda3D for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your MF because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When another MF application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Panda3D is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Panda3D won't support your Gameplay Multifile file. You will need to download a newer version of Panda3D if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Gameplay Multifile file was created by a newer version of Panda3D than you have on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of MF file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening MF files are due to having the wrong version of Panda3D installed.

Other Causes of MF File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of Panda3D installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MFs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MF files. Additional factors include:

  • Invalid MF file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Corruption of the MF file description inside the Registry
  • Panda3D or another MF application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your MF file is corrupted (issues with your Gameplay Multifile file itself)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your MF
  • MF-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Windows cannot load your Gameplay Multifile file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
