SR Troubleshooting

Troubles Opening SR Files

Missing GIMP

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open SR Files" when trying to open your SR. Usually, this is because you do not have GIMP for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the SR file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another SR application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Incorrect GIMP Version

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Sun Raster Image File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of GIMP installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Sun Raster Image File file version that was created by a newer version of GIMP than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your SR file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: Not having the right GIMP version on your computer can cause problems opening SR files.

Other SR File Opening Causes

Although you might already have GIMP or another SR-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Sun Raster Image File files. Other SR opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • SR file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Deletion of the SR file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of GIMP that did not fully complete
  • File corruption affecting your SR file
  • Malware-tainted SR file can't be opened
  • Device drivers for SR-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your Sun Raster Image File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
