Troubleshoot XVP Files

Common Problems Opening XVP Files

XView Isn't There

Double-clicking your XVP file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open XVP File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have XView for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your XVP with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XVP, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Outdated XView

Your Xview Package File file is incompatible with XView because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest XView version from the Sun Microsystems website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your Xview Package File file was probably created by a newer release of XView than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your XVP, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Regardless, most of the XVP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of XView installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening XVPs

Although you might already have XView or another XVP-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Xview Package File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading XVP files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for XVP are wrong
  • Corruption of the XVP file description inside the Registry
  • Partial installation of XView that did not fully complete
  • Something has caused file corruption of your XVP
  • The XVP is infected with a virus
  • Hardware associated with XVP has outdated drivers
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Xview Package File file successfully
