MU File Complications
Troubles Opening MU Files
Squad Kerbal Space Program Isn't There
When you double-click your MU file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Squad Kerbal Space Program for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your MU with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens MU files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Squad Kerbal Space Program Version
Sometimes your installed version of Squad Kerbal Space Program won't support your Kerbal Space Program Mesh File file. If you've got the wrong version of Squad Kerbal Space Program installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Kerbal Space Program Mesh File file was probably created by a newer release of Squad Kerbal Space Program than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your MU file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the MU file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Squad Kerbal Space Program installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening MUs
Assuming you have the right Squad Kerbal Space Program version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening MU files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MUs. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for MU
- Accidental deletion of the description of the MU file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Squad Kerbal Space Program or other MU-related program
- MU file corruption
- Malware-tainted MU file can't be opened
