Common NOTE Opening Problems

Missing Notessimo

When you double-click your NOTE file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Notessimo isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your NOTE, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Notessimo is Out-of-Date

In other instances, your Notessimo Composition file version may not be supported by your version of Notessimo. Visit the Starburst website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Notessimo. This problem is predominately due to having a Notessimo Composition file version that was created by a newer version of Notessimo than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of NOTE file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Conclusion: The majority of NOTE file opening issues are due to not having the correct Notessimo version installed.

Other Causes of NOTE File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of Notessimo installed, you can still experience difficulties opening NOTEs. Other NOTE opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

• NOTE file references in the Windows Registry are broken
• Unintentional removal of the description of the NOTE file inside the Windows Registry
• Partial installation of Notessimo that did not fully complete
• Your NOTE file is corrupted (issues with your Notessimo Composition file itself)
• Your NOTE is infected with malware
• Hardware related to NOTEs has device driver corruption
• Windows cannot load your Notessimo Composition file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
